Halloween is my favorite day of the year. Wacky costumes, innocuous shenanigans, unexpected thrills, and sudden outbursts of dread send an adrenaline rush that seems just right. When I decided to spend my Halloween with video games, I wanted to leave you with the scariest thing ever – my thoughts!
I guess starting with Gotham Knights, the game seems unnecessary on every level at this point. Is it better than its predecessors (Arkham Knight & Arkham City) – no. Does it offer a newer, more detailed combat system – no. Is this a promising new direction in terms of its narrative? Wouldn’t it be better to simply replay the Arkham classic – yes.
I’m not at odds with Gotham Knights at all; Grind doesn’t seem necessary, and at times it seems conceptualized as a free-to-play game, suddenly asked to grow up and pretend to be the flagship game. It lacks the polish, purpose, and direction characteristic of Arkham games. Maybe stay away from this?
The second I watched was Bayonetta 3, a game that got into controversy when a voice artist who voiced the titular character talked about not being paid enough to reprise her role. The game is fun and the action scenes are spectacular. Although the story seems a bit generic to me as Bayonetta has carved out her own multiverse with this game.
For the game eight years after the last entry, I was expecting something more engaging. The multiverse is a dime these days. The battle is worth it though, and Bayonetta 3 is a worthy sequel. All in all, as I noted in my 2017 review, even today, this is still the only game where you can shoot bullets with stilettos.
The last game on this list has yet to be released and is only officially available to players from November 9th. Most gamers will tell you that Ragnarok is the most anticipated game of the year. I can personally confirm that the reason I bought the PS5 was to play Ragnarok and the next The Last of Us. As things stand, I couldn’t be more excited, and from whatever I’ve seen so far, Ragnarok will have more open-world dynamics like side quests and exploration.
This is God of War a step further into a once-unknown territory. Personally, I like the switch from the classic hack ‘n’ slash linear style, and I think the open world will provide space for the game’s story to flesh out Kratos vs Atreus’ father and vice versa. I was looking forward to the duel between Thor and Kratos, and as my nephew told me, I was a little worried about Kratos this time.
Finally, news reports indicate that the connectors on some of Nvidia’s RTX 4090s have caught fire. Personally, I think for a card worth over $1,500, it should be able to stop bullets for you and leave unscathed. So, it’s a little disappointing. $1,500 available? I want my own GPU for Diwali.
That’s it, Halloween video game roundup. If you want to be afraid to play games, I can’t recommend Until Dawn.
