Taipei: A senior Russian diplomat flew to Beijing for talks with the Chinese government on Sunday, a day after a failed rebellion by Russian mercenary commanders.
In a brief statement on its website, China’s foreign ministry said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang to discuss “international and regional issues of mutual concern”.
Russia and China, while not formal allies, have maintained close ties during Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, which China has declined to condemn.
Rudenko’s visit came after Yevgeny Prigorzhin, head of the private mercenary Wagner Group, ordered his troops to march on Moscow in the biggest challenge to President Vladimir Putin’s more than two decades in power.
Later on Saturday, Igorzhin struck an exile deal with the Kremlin and sounded the call to retreat.
China has yet to comment formally on the Russia crisis.
The United States and other Western powers have urged China not to supply Russia with weapons that could be used in the conflict in Ukraine.
China sent envoys to Ukraine and Russia in May to try to mediate an end to the war.
