London: Manchester City have signed midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea on a four-year deal.
Kovacic is City’s first signing of the summer after winning the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup treble last season.
The 29-year-old made 221 appearances in five seasons at Chelsea, winning the Champions League, Europa League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup, and was named the club’s player of the year for 2019/20 .
“It’s a fantastic move for me and I can’t wait to join City. Anyone who has seen this team under Pep knows how good they are – to me they are the best in the world. The best team. The trophies they have won are there for all to see, but they are also the best team in football,” Kovacic said in a club statement.
“Joining this team is truly any footballer’s dream. I still have a lot to learn and develop and I know I can be a better player under Pep’s management and that’s true for me. It’s very exciting.
My plan now is to rest for a few weeks and then go back to Manchester to prepare for the new season. I want to help this club stay on top and win more trophies. ’ he added.
Kovacic, who has played 95 times for the Croatian national team so far, was a key part of Croatia’s run to the 2018 World Cup final and third-place finish at last year’s tournament in Qatar.
“Mateo is an excellent footballer. He can play as a 6 or 8, has experience at top clubs and he understands the Premier League,” said Txiki Begiristain, Manchester City’s director of football.
“Bringing him to Manchester City was a very easy decision because he has the tactical and technical quality we look for in a midfielder. He’s someone we’ve had our eyes on for a long time and whenever we see him we always look at him. is impressive.
I’m glad he’s here. It’s a great signing for the club and I’m excited to see what he can do with Pep and the rest of our team behind the scenes,” he added.
