Yuki Bhambri clinches first ATP doubles title in Mallorca

Mallorca: Indian tennis player Yuki Bhambri won the 2023 Mallorca Open men’s doubles final with South African partner Lloyd Harris to claim his first ATP Tour title.

The India-South Africa duo finished without dropping a set as they beat Dutch-Austrian duo Robin Haas and Philipp Oswald 6-3, 6-4 in Saturday’s ATP 250 final.

The trophy is the duo’s first ATP Tour title in both singles and doubles. Before that, only Harris had reached a tour-level final, twice in singles and once in doubles.

“Definitely fun. I don’t think we had any expectations this week. We just enjoyed the game, game by game, and had a great game. It’s a great city, a great place, I really I love playing here,” the 30-year-old Bambry was quoted as saying by the ATP Tour.

“We had a lot of fun there,” said Harris, 26, who became the first South African to win an ATP Tour title since Raven Klaassen in Seoul last year.

“We’re really enjoying it. I didn’t even know I was going to race this week. For me, it’s just a bonus. I’m really excited about this title,” he added.

Eliminate fourth seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the quarterfinals and top seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger Va in the semifinals After Sellin, Bambry and Harris cashed in four of six break points to seal the final victory. With the help of eight aces, they won 90 percent of their first serve points, faced only two break points and saved one.

With the title, Bambry rose to No. 58 in the ATP Doubles Live Rankings, a career high for himself.

Notably, Bambry, who turns 31 on Tuesday, started doubles last year after an injury-plagued singles career.

Yuki Bambry is mainly partnered with compatriot Sakeis Meineny in the men’s doubles. The duo won the Bangkok Open Challenge in January and then the Girona Challenge in Spain this April.

The Indian duo also competed at the 2023 Australian Open and defeated the French duo of Arthur Rinderknech and Enzo Couacaud at the 2023 French Open to win. their first Grand Slam match.
