Buddhist sculptures from Surya Petfanigiri excavation site to be sent to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for special exhibition

Hyderabad: Buddhist sculptures from the Surya Petfanigiri excavation site will be sent to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for a special exhibit titled “Trees and Serpents—Early Buddhist Art in India, 200 BC-400 AD.” and National Museum, Seoul, December 22-April 14, 2024.
To this end, Sandeep Kumar Sultania, director of the heritage department, along with officials and others, visited the Phanigiri Buddhist monastery in Suyapet on Sunday. Ruins of Nagaram mandal.
The delegation inspected the Buddhist sites from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD, as well as the buildings discovered during the excavation, including Mahasudupa, Votive Pagoda, Vihara, Auditorium, Chaityagrihas, etc.
A selection of sculptures found at this Buddhist site for display include Ayaka or courtyard wall lime panels (Ikshvaku period), Torana lintels with lion makara terminals (Ikshavaku period) and Torana lintels with elephant makara terminals (Ikshavaku period).
Tourism Minister V Srinivas Goud and Sandeep Kumar Sultania will attend the opening of the exhibition in New York on July 17. The event will also introduce the historical importance of the Buddhist site of Fanigiri and the sculptures selected for the exhibition.
