Hyderabad: Customs officers seized nearly two kilograms of heroin worth Rs 140 crore from a passenger in a major drug bust at RGI Airport in Shamshabad on Monday.
On suspicion, officers of the air intelligence unit of the Customs Department intercepted a female passenger from the Republic of Burundi, who arrived by plane from Nairobi via Sharjah on Sunday.
“During inspection of the passenger’s luggage, eight pieces of traditional African clothing, a handbag and three bars of soap were found. However, the luggage appeared to be heavier than normal, raising suspicion about the shipment,” the customs official said.
Officers opened the bags and found small packets of heroin stashed among layers of buttons on clothing, walls, handbags and soap.
“A total of 2,027 grams of drugs worth Rs 142 crore was seized. The passenger has been arrested and appeared in court,” the officials added.
