Opposition parties demanded that he hold his party government in Gujarat state accountable for the tragedy that has rocked the nation.
Hyderabad: An old piece about Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when he campaigned for the BJP in 2016 after the bridge collapsed in Morbi, Gujarat The video went viral online.
Opposition parties demanded that he hold his party government in Gujarat state accountable for the tragedy that has rocked the nation.
In 2016, Modi targeted Banerjee after the collapse of the Vivekananda Road overpass ahead of Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, calling it a “fraud.”
“Such a big bridge collapsed, what did these people say? They said it was God’s work. Didi, it’s not God’s will, it’s a fraud. It’s the result of a fraud. It’s definitely God’s work that it Falling down during elections, people start to know what kind of government you have been running. This is God’s message to people that today the bridge has collapsed and tomorrow Bangladesh will be finished,” Modi said.
Opposition parties and several netizens also asked why the prime minister shouldn’t hold his own party to account when more people died in Morby. They also said Modi’s 2016 statement was inhumane because he made it a political issue at the time and tried to get ahead by blaming the state government.
BJP- Trinamool Argument over Tragedy
Meanwhile, the heat of the Morby Bridge collapse spread to West Bengal, with a war of words between the Trinamur Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party over the accident.
According to West Bengal Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty, the accident is a prime example of rampant corruption in Gujarat. “Whenever anything happens in West Bengal, no matter how small the development, the BJP’s central fact-finding team will visit the state. I would now like to ask the state BJP leaders here if they will now send a similar one to Gujarat Fact-finding teams. They are always in West Bengal on a troubleshooting mission. Their only purpose is to disrupt the state administration in West Bengal. My advice to them is to control things in Gujarat first and then consider West Bengal,” Chakraborty Say.
TMC senior lawmaker Tapas Roy said the accident was an example of how hollow the BJP and Gujarat government’s high demands for structural engineering, bridge quality and first-class infrastructure development were. “I’m just wondering what they have to claim now. There have been questions about whether it makes sense to open the bridge to the public before their health is checked,” Roy said.
However, West Bengal BJP spokesman Samik Bhattacharya rejected the TMC leader’s critical remarks. “If Trinamool Congress leaders and ministers were so cautious about the perfection of civil works, their leaders and state chief minister Mamata Banerjee would not have forced Kolkata Metro Limited to change the route of the Kolkata East-West Metro.
Cracks are common in houses in the crowded Baubazar area due to the change in routes, leaving residents helpless. What happened in Gujarat was undoubtedly tragic. The state government there will investigate. But there is no reason to shout about the accident in West Bengal. The state government should not forget the Posta Flyover collapse,” Bhattacharya said.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted his condolences for the victims of the Morby Bridge collapse. “I am deeply concerned by the tragic bridge collapse in Morbi, Gujarat, which took the lives of several innocent people and trapped many. My deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased. I pray for a speedy recovery for the injured,” she wrote on Twitter.
