Toronto: A 25-year-old Indian-Canadian man has been shot dead in British Columbia. Last year, he was deemed by police to be a significant threat to the public because of his gang involvement.
The Integrated Homicide Team (IHIT) identified the deceased as Karnvir Singh Garcha, who was shot and killed near Foster Avenue and North Road in Coquitlam at 9:20 p.m. on July 2.
“Police who arrived found a man with gunshot wounds and immediately began life-saving measures,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Coquitlam said, adding that Garcha succumbed to his injuries. Garcha was transported to an apartment complex minutes before he was murdered, police said. IHIT’s Timothy Pierotti said in a release, “We would like to speak to anyone who had contact with Mr. Gacha in the days leading up to the shooting, including sending him down. The driver of the vehicle.” The RCMP said in a statement last week that police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that the investigation is in the evidence-gathering phase. In December, Surrey RCMP and British Columbia’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Squad issued a joint warning for Gacha and another Indian-Canadian, Hakirat Judy, for gang involvement. The warning was issued because “these individuals pose a significant threat to the public through their association with criminal activity and high levels of violence,” a release said.
