New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The CBI on Friday detained three railway personnel in connection with the June 2 Balasore train accident, the first arrests in the case, officials said.
The agency arrested Senior Section Engineer (Signal) Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Mohammed Amir Khan and Technician Pappu Kumar, they said. Kumar), who are both stationed in the Balasore area.
The three are also accused of withholding evidence after the accident.
The three were arrested under IPC sections 304 (manslaughter not constituting murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence), officials said.
The accused was then brought before the CBI special court in Bhubaneswar under heavy security.
CBI sources said it had sought seven days of remand but the court allowed five days for further investigation.
The accident occurred near the Bahanaga Bazar station in the Balasore district of Odisha, killing 293 people, of whom 287 died on the spot or were sent to the hospital, and another 6 died of injuries in the hospital.
The railway disaster involved three trains: the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, the Bangalore-Howrah Express and a stationary freight train.
