Leeds: Travis Head’s half-century burst gave Australia chances and set up a 251-run goal for England to win a third Ashes win on Saturday’s rainy third day cup test.
In five rounds chasing the stumps, England got off to a bright start in the evening sun, unbeaten on 27 points. Ben Duckett had 18 and Zac Crawley had nine. They cut their targets down to 224 with two days remaining and England must win to keep the series alive and have all 10 wickets. Australia leads 2-0.
Rain at Headingley prevented the game from starting for nearly five hours after tea, while England took advantage of well-timed conditions to narrow Australia from an overnight 116-4 to 170 in the round of 14 -8.
Hyde was just trying to survive as wickets fell around him. But Australia trailed by just 196 and with Todd Murphy backing off in the fifth Test, Hyde, on 34, decided to fight back to score as many points as possible. First, however, he had to wait for Murphy to hit England’s fastest bowler Mark Wood with a cover strike for both boundaries and a glove on the leg side.
Head drew two boundaries off Chris Woakes’ one over as England widened the pitch and went without anyone in the match against Australia’s last recognized batsman. In defense of Murphy, Hyde hit his 22nd half-century with two more boundaries against Wood. He Lavoux hit a six over the center wicket before Murphy made a valuable 11 runs ahead of Stuart Broad in 41 runs in the ninth wicket.
Hyde hit back-to-back sixes against Wood on deep square and thin legs to push Australia’s lead to 250. That’s all. He was out with a 77 when he slipped one over Stuart Broad.
The Australian team scored 108 points in 20.1 rounds and went all out for 224 points. Hyde has 59. Hyde took 34 off 82 balls as Australia lost its eighth wicket. He scored 43 of his next 30 goals.
Broad and Vokes took three wickets each, and Wood got Mitchell Stark and Pat Cummins. Vokes joined the wickets of Mitch Marsh and Alex Carey on Saturday to become the 16th bowler in England and the 15th in England to take 100 Test wickets. The only other player with a higher average than Vux is Shane Warne, who has a 21.9 average.
