Varanasi: A vegetable seller in Varanasi Lanka deployed two bodyguards to prevent buyers from getting aggressive while haggling. Tomato prices have skyrocketed almost across the country, almost making tomatoes a luxury item.
Ajay Fauji, a Samajwadi Party worker, cuts earlier in Varanasi for the birthday of Samajwadi Party chairman Akhilesh Yadav A cake in the shape of a tomato.
“I kept hearing people arguing about the price of tomatoes. People in my shop were also trying to haggle. So, to end the constant arguments, I decided to deploy uniformed bodyguards on my shopping cart,” Fauji told PTI.
Fauji, whose tomatoes sell for Rs 140-160 per kg, has bodyguards deployed in his car from 9am to 5pm.
However, he declined to disclose how much he hired them for. “Nobody gives bodyguards for free.” Asked how keeping bodyguards on the cart helped him, Fadge said they were less aggressive about pricing now, even though the same number of people showed up.
SP chairman Akhilesh Yadav also shared pictures of news footage of Fauji and his bodyguards, tweeting: “BJP should provide ‘Z-Plus’ security for tomatoes.”
