Bangalore: A vehicle carrying 2,000kg of tomatoes to a market in Bengaluru was robbed by unidentified gangsters, police said.

The incident happened on July 8 at the RMC Yard police station near Chikkajala.

According to the police, the farmer was transporting produce from the town of Hiriyur in Chitradurga to the Kolar market.

Three gangsters followed the tomato car in a car.

They then ambushed the vehicle and attacked the farmer and driver, claiming their vehicle had been hit.

They also demanded money from them, which was later transferred to their mobile phones.

The gangsters then boarded the vehicle with the tomatoes and drove away, leaving the farmer and driver on the road.

RMC Field Police are collecting CCTV footage for leads on the offenders.

The price of tomatoes in Karnataka has reached Rs 120-150 per kg.

Farmers are forced to set up tents and guard their tomato crops as outlaws invade the farm and commit theft for quick cash.
