Hyderabad: Construction work on the modern hospital complex of the state-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital (SD Eye Hospital) in Mehdipatnam is expected to start in the next few days. The long-delayed move, which has been pending for years, will breathe new life into the government’s tertiary eye hospital, which has struggled for years with a dilapidated medical infrastructure.
During a recent inspection of the tertiary eye care facility, State Health Minister T Harish Rao said the state government was preparing the groundwork for the construction of a modern hospital complex at SD Eye Hospital.
SD Eye Hospital complex is situated on 10.79 acres in Mehdipatnam, known for its free super professional eye care facility. The entire campus houses the outpatient building, emergency/casualty unit, administration building, inpatient wards, kitchen and PG medical staff accommodation.
A few years ago, the Telangana government decided in principle to upgrade the entire hospital. The upgrade was originally expected to begin, but the prestigious project has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“With the health minister giving the green signal to the project, we expect the project to be launched in the next few days. The new building will have a huge positive impact as patients from remote parts of Telangana and areas in neighboring states will benefit in modern facilities,” said Dr Rajalingam, Director of SD Eye Hospital.
A few years ago, as directed by the state government, TSMSIDC (Telangana State Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation) carried out a detailed survey of the existing buildings of the SD Eye Hospital Complex. Almost all buildings on campus are dilapidated. According to TSMSIDC survey, the new campus will cost close to Rs 400 crore.
The walls and ceilings of the administration building, operating theaters and emergency wing were damp, and cracks, large and small, appeared in the walls of all the main hospital wings. Some of the buildings inside the hospital complex are in pretty bad shape. Tiled floors, ceilings, toilets, wooden doors, windows, taps, etc. are in poor condition and defective. TSMSIDC reports that PG dormitories on campus are in a collapsed state.
