Telangana's mid-term admissions not yet resumed

Hyderabad: More than half of the enrollment in the second period has passed, and the enrollment of first-year and intermediate-level students under the management of various specialties is still very low.

In fact, less than half of the students who pass the SSC public exam in 2023 are already enrolled in post-secondary institutions in the state.

In 2023, a total of 4,73,237 students passed the Category X examination, of which only 2,32,264 students, or 49%, entered 2,270 specialized schools of various streams.

A quick glance at Telangana Board of Secondary Education (TS BIE) figures reveals that private tertiary institutions, which started enrolling before X-grade was announced, have been lagging behind. 1,151 private colleges enrolled 140,659 students, only 44% of last year’s 317,418 students.

The 408 government junior colleges (GJCs) had an enrollment of 59,463, compared with 77,211 enrollment last year. Board of Secondary Education officials attributed the decline in GJC enrollments to the regularization of contract junior instructors and the establishment of a large number of residential junior colleges in each district.

“Previously, GJC’s contract junior lecturers and general junior lecturers used to go door-to-door to advertise events and recruit students in their respective colleges. Since their services are now formalized, they no longer focus on admissions. In addition, a large number of parents are sending themselves of children are sent to boarding specialist schools,” the officials said.

In addition, TSBIE data shows that so far, there are 3,216 junior colleges under different management in the country, and 946 colleges (including 420 private junior colleges) have not yet enrolled students.

The colleges may have admitted students, according to TS BIE officials, but did not provide details to the board. The last date for all administered next-year intermediate admissions for the 2023-24 school year is July 25.

Approval for the employment of contract teachers in government junior colleges

The state government has approved the employment of 2,255 service personnel, including contract teachers at government junior colleges.

The approved teachers include 449 contract teachers, 3 minimum-time teachers, 97 part-time teachers, 1,654 visiting teachers and 52 outsourced teachers in the state’s 408 GJCs.

The 2,255 candidates will continue to serve until March 31, 2024, until regular positions are filled or until actual need ceases, whichever is earlier, according to a copy of the order issued by the Department of Higher Education.

Faculties have been directed to establish new contacts with candidates working on contract, guest, honorarium or outsourced agency.
