Adilabad: Through “Operation Musk”, more than 6,000 children have been released from debt bondage within five years, helping them realize their dreams of going to school and living a better life.

The government launched “Operation Muskan” in 2017 to eliminate bonded labour, and it runs every January and July. The initiative was successfully implemented by the Women’s and Children’s Welfare Department in partnership with the Police, Labor and a voluntary organization to free children from the bondage of bonded labour.

A seven-member team, including four police officers and officials from these departments, launched a month-long special operation to identify children forced to work. They counsel parents and ensure that children attend school. They ensure that investigations are opened against owners of small restaurants, fruit vendors, bakeries, fabric shops, etc. who exploit children.

According to officials, a total of 6,425 children were rescued in eight phases of “Operation Musk” between 2017 and 2023. Among them, 4,833 were boys and 1,593 were girls. As many as 626 orphans, destitute children and children with special needs were placed in government-run shelters.

A total of 1,583 children were detected in the Adilabad area during these eight phases. A total of 2,784 child laborers were employed in Mancherial, while 1,136 and 923 children were rescued in Nirmal district and Kumram Bheem Asifabad district, respectively. A total of 5,746 children were counseled and enrolled in these four districts.
