Three more Amarnath pilgrims die, death toll rises to 30
Two of the pilgrims died of cardiac arrest and the cause of death of a third is being determined, officials added.

Srinagar: Three more Amarnath pilgrims have died, officials said on Monday, bringing the death toll during this year’s pilgrimage in the southern Himalayas in Kashmir to 30.

The three pilgrims who died since Sunday morning were from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Two of the pilgrims died of cardiac arrest and the cause of death of a third is being determined, officials added.

While two people died on the Pahalgam route of the yatra, there was also one death on the Baltal route, they said.

The three deaths have brought the death toll during this year’s pilgrimage to 30 so far.

Among the victims were an India-Tibet Border Police (ITBP) officer on a pilgrimage mission, a fakir and a Sevadar, according to officials.

Cardiac arrest triggered by low oxygen levels at high altitude is one of the most common causes of death for Amarnath pilgrims and the security forces stationed there.

To date, more than 230,000 pilgrims have visited the cave shrine to witness the formation of a natural ice linga.

The 62-day annual pilgrimage began on July 1 from Pahagam in the Anantnag district and Baltar in the Gandhbar district on the dual track to the cave shrine at an altitude of 3,888 meters in the southern Himalayas of Kashmir.

The pilgrimage is scheduled to end on August 31.
