Hyderabad: Don’t stress, just have fun! In order to reduce the pressure and stress of students’ studies and to curb the rising suicidal tendencies, the authorities have decided to introduce “happiness lessons” in all public and local schools this school year.
The Department of School Education is developing special programs to develop and promote the overall wellbeing and mental health of students by integrating social and emotional learning into the regular classroom. It will also focus on how to deal with one’s emotions and failures, in line with the Delhi government’s “happiness curriculum”.
Initially, each district will select one public school to implement the special curriculum and two teachers will be specially trained for this purpose. Education Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy said schools are introducing special curricula that, apart from imparting social skills, can instil confidence, mental and emotional stability in students.
Topics covered in the course include learning about mindfulness, being aware of one’s emotions, recognizing fleeting moments of happiness, observing the contributions of relationships (mother, father, and sibling), respect, affection, and trust.
Currently, the Delhi government is teaching such lessons to eighth-grade students in its kindergarten schools. The course is based on the happiness triad and is divided into three units – exploring happiness through learning and awareness, experiencing happiness in relationships through feeling, and experiencing happiness through active participation.
