impal: All four accused were arrested on Thursday over a viral video of a woman parading naked in Manipur and were remanded by police for 11 days on Friday.
“All four accused have been remanded by the police for 11 days,” Manipur police said. All four defendants were arrested Thursday, according to officials.
“Four main accused in viral video case arrested: 03 (three) other main accused for kidnapping and gang rape in Nongpok Sekmai PS, Thoubal district have been arrested today. A total of 04 (four) have been arrested so far,” Manipur police said in a tweet on Thursday.
The incident is said to have occurred on May 4, the day after ethnic clashes erupted in Manipur. After the video went viral, the police swung into action and arrested four people, including the main accused.
On Thursday night, after learning of the video, the police said that the Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district had registered a case of kidnapping, gang rape and murder against unidentified armed men and was doing all it could to arrest the perpetrators as soon as possible.
The two women were allegedly sexually assaulted before being released by mobs in the majority neighborhood.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said in his speech that he was distressed by the incident, which he said was “disgraceful to any civil society”.
“All the accused will not be spared and we will never forgive those who are behind the scenes,” Prime Minister Modi said. The violence in Manipur erupted after a May 3 rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) to protest against the proposed inclusion of people from the Meitei community on the List of Scheduled Tribes (ST).
