Port of Spain: Virat Kohli shot 121 to help India along with the 50s of Rohit Sharma (80), Ravindra Jadeja (61), Yashasvi Jaiswal (57) and Ravichandran Ashwin (56). Team scored 438 in the first innings on the second day of Friday’s second Test at Queen’s Park Oval.

West Indies beat India for an impressive 438 runs in the second period as the visitors lost wickets from Ishan, Ashwin, Jaydev Unadkat and Mohammed Siraj. India’s record at lunch was 373/6, taking 65 runs from 20 overs, conceding four wickets, and finishing with 438 in the afternoon tea game.

Ashwin and Ishan started their second meeting with some boundaries. But West Indies attacked early in the game, sending Ishan off for 21 runs.

Ishan was behind in the delivery of Jason Holder, who bowled well off the stumps, but the left-hander edged it out and Joshua Da Silva easily caught the catch behind the stumps.

Ashwin was ruled LBW out by the referee shortly after, but he reviewed the decision, which ultimately proved to be a good one, as ball tracking showed the ball narrowly missing the leg stump.

Ashwin led India past the 400-run mark with an impressive performance of batting with grace and intelligence. Later, Jomel Warrican fired Jaydev Unadkat. Warrican again fended off Mohd Siraj, leaving India nine shots behind on 426.

Ashwin then switched gears and smashed Kemar Roach twice to complete his half-century for 76 before bowling for 56 as India finished with 438.

Resuming India’s game at 288/2 earlier, Kohli hit Shannon Gabriel’s boundary in the 71st over to hit his 29th Test century.

Jadeja also put up his 19th Test 50 shortly after. Kohli and Jadeja showed remarkable consistency at the crease as the duo put together a run-and-run combination of 159 for the fifth wicket.

West Indies desperately needed a breakthrough as Kohli finished with 121 individual runs.

Later, Jadeja was bowled 61 by Kemar Roach, but India dominated and they were 373/6 at lunch. On the first day, India’s four-man batted 288 over the stumps. Rohit (80 off 143 balls), Yashaswi Jaiswal (57 off 74 balls) batted half-centuries for the visitors after being sent to bat.

Brief grades: India took all 438 out in the first innings (Virat Kohli 121, Ravindra Jadeja 61; R Ashwin 56; Kemar Roach 3/104, Jomel Warrican 3/89) against West Indies.
