Hyderabad: Rainfall continued unabated for a fifth day in parts of Telangana state on Saturday, flooding low-lying areas and bringing normal life to a standstill. Lakes, tanks and other bodies of water are flooding due to persistent rains in parts of Andhra Pradesh’s northern coast.
Authorities opened the flood gates to release flood water due to the floodwaters upstream of the irrigation works. Three people were killed in the state on Friday due to rain.
The state government has extended the holidays for educational institutions by one more day (Saturday) in view of the persistent rain.
Reviewing the situation, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao directed officials to remain vigilant to prevent casualties. Heavy rains hit the Adilabad Union District, flooding low-lying areas.
Rainwater entered some settlements in Adilabad town, causing serious hardship to the residents. The Penganga and Godavari rivers surged, flooding low-lying areas. Projects in the Godavari Basin are receiving significant capital inflows from upstream.
Flooding continues at Kadam project in Nirmal district. The water level has risen to 688.22 feet, with a maximum of 700 feet. Authorities have opened 14 of the project’s floodgates, releasing 84,269 cubic seconds of water. The Swarna Reservoir in the Nilmar district is receiving a lot of water. The water level has risen to 1,180 feet and the full tank is 1,183 feet.
Coal production at the Singaraney Coal Mines Ltd (SCCL) coal mine has been paralyzed for the fourth consecutive day. The Kaulasa Nala project in the Kamareddy area continues to receive significant capital inflows. The project’s water level has risen to 456.60 feet from a full level of 458 feet. The Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) also continues to receive significant inflows of funds.
The current water level of the project is 1,079.10 feet and the full water level is 1,091 feet. If the current inflow of funds continues for 2-3 days, the project’s doors will have to be opened, officials said. Meanwhile, the water level in Bhadrachalam Godavari in Bhadradri Kothagudem district has dropped. The water level dropped to 39.4 feet Saturday morning.
The district government has withdrawn the first red flag. However, water levels are likely to rise again as upstream projects receive significant inflows of funds from neighboring Maharashtra.
