Warsaw: Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva has been banned from entering Poland, Poland’s Interior Ministry said. She will compete in the WTA 250 Championship in Warsaw.

A communiqué on the foreign ministry’s website on Friday said border guards prevented the entry of the former world number two, who had flown in from Belgrade on a French visa. She remained in the transit area of Warsaw airport and flew to Podgorica, Montenegro on Saturday.

Zvonareva, currently ranked 60, will play the PNB Paribas Warsaw Open starting Monday.

The 38-year-old remains on the list of participants for Sunday’s event.

In a statement, the WTA said it was assessing the situation.

Poland, which supports Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression, said Zvonareva was on a banned list and was not allowed to enter the country for reasons of national and public security.

The communiqué emphasized that Poland has consistently opposed the “regime of Russian and Belarusian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Aleksandr Lukashenko” and does not allow “persons who support the actions of Russia and Belarus to enter our country”.
