Soon, all school buses in Telangana will have to have CCTV cameras

School education departments may also make GPS mandatory on school buses

Hyderabad: The Department of Schooling, which sees the safety and security of students as its top priority, will soon make CCTV cameras mandatory on all school buses in the state, especially those operated by private schools. Schools must install CCTV cameras and digital video recorders at the front and rear of school buses.

In addition to CCTV, GPS is also likely to become mandatory for school buses. The system will allow parents and school authorities to track the location of the bus in real time. One such recommendation has been sent to the state government and an order is expected soon.

Both School Education and Transport will oversee implementation in schools, including those affiliated with SSC, CBSE, ICSE, etc.

In addition to safety and security measures, the department has also drawn up plans to upload details of private schools affiliated to different boards on its website. Details will include whether the school is affiliated with any boards, and if so, which class, additional classes (if any) and the school’s address.

There are 12,000 private schools across the state with a student population of nearly 3 million. The move to make school details public will allow parents and students to determine whether the school is accredited by the government and affiliation with the relevant school board.

In a recent investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a four-year-old girl by the driver of a principal at Bangara Hills School, the school’s education department found the school was only licensed up to V level, but was still teaching classes outside of the CBSE syllabus , courses at Levels VI and VII are introduced without permission.

As this is a clear breach of the regulations, the state government has directed the school education department to take appropriate action against the school management.
