'Munugode bypoll will take BRS to the national stage'

After days of high-decibel campaigning and the BJP’s failed attempt at a horse trade, the people of Munugod will go to the polls today.

Hyderabad: When the people of Munugod went to the polls on Thursday, candidates not only from different parties, but from every other quarter, had high hopes for the future.

Munugode, who represents Telangana Rashtra Samithi, is seen as a stepping stone for Bharat Rashtra Samithi into the country’s political situation.

TRS working chairman KT Rama Rao is confident that party candidate Koosukuntla Prabhakar Reddy will win with an absolute majority, saying the victory will inject new energy into party cadres.

In an informal interaction with the media on Wednesday, Rama Rao said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become a “huge threat” to the poor because every policy decision he makes weakens them. Despite other parties, he asserted that the TRS (BRS) will go head-to-head with the BJP. Unlike Congress, the TRS (BRS) has clear rules on issues related to Telangana and the country, he said, noting that Munugode’s victory would set a template for the BRS’s journey forward.

The minister said the BJP was inciting violence and would disrupt Thursday’s polls to any extent, adding that the BJP’s conspiracy to buy TRS priorities was only to damage the morale of party cadres. “But when their plan failed, BJP national chairman JP Nadda cancelled his meeting in Munugode. Now, they are resorting to violence to disrupt the vote,” he said.

BJP’s game plan

Rama Rao said the Munugode bypoll was forced on the people as part of union Home Minister Amit Shah’s larger gamble to win the election and attract leaders from other parties into the BJP. As it has done in other states, the BJP tried to poach Leaders, deploying smaller parties to divide the votes of rival parties, spreading false propaganda, inciting communal violence and polarizing voters, implement their game plan of foraying into Telangana.

“Indeed, the failed attempt to poach the TRS MLA was also part of this gamble. But we have a strategist at KCR to thwart all their game plans. The BJP is falling to the bottom by deploying Swamijis to do their dirty work New lows. What has emerged in the case is just the tip of the iceberg and will be exposed in court.”

CBI is now Modi’s parrot

In barring the CBI from entering the state, Rama Rao said Prime Minister Modi had specifically abused the constitutional body to feed his political agenda, which TRS would not allow in Telangana. “As the then chief minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi called the CBI a parrot of the central government when Congress was in power. I totally agree with him because he is now abusing it,” he said.

In response to a question about Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan keeping several bills pending approval, Rama Rao said it was inappropriate for the governor to hold the bills for a long time and create a conflict between the two democratic and constitutional institutions.

As the Doge system is part of the British era, he believes it should be scrapped, as the Prime Minister suggested in his 75th Independence Day speech, to overcome the colonial hangover.

BJP kills state

The minister also accused the centre of abusing its powers to stifle the opposition-ruled country and make the people suffer to make the chief minister look bad. In addition to squeezing funds from states, the center is awaiting decisions on issues such as water distribution in the Krishna, he said.

Rama Rao said the BJP government at the centre is forcing several companies to set up their units in BJP-ruled states such as Gujarat if prerequisite approval for the centre is required.

BRS focuses first on neighbors

He suspected the BJP was playing a sabotage campaign when the Election Commission of India (ECI) delayed its approval of the BRS as the national party. The party plans to focus first on the neighbouring state of Telangana before expanding its activities to other parts of the country. “Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is targeting the 2024 general election,” he said.

Munugode prefers TRS

Ramarao said the situation in the Munugod constituency was favorable for the party. The TRS government ended the fluorosis crisis by providing drinking water to every household. This helped the party win the hearts of Munugode voters. People have made up their minds long ago, he said.
