Women burn 11,000 diyas in memory of Karthika Pournami at the Sai Baba Temple in Gudimalkapur, Hyderabad.
Hyderabad: Karthika Masam is considered one of the holiest months of the year and the lighting of diyas (lamps) in temples and houses in front of Tulasi plants is an auspicious ceremony.
As part of the Karthika Masam ceremony, some 400 people from all walks of life gathered recently to participate in the illumination of 11,000 earthen diyas at the Sai Baba Temple in Gudimalkapur.
The diyas arranged in the shape of the symbolic Shiva Lingam are lit by devotees in just five hours. A group of five who supported the idea, including Santosh Rani Desai, Raj Mohan Lal Desai, Vandana Desai, Padma and Sparsha Mahendra, started the tradition in 2014, and others soon followed.
“We have continued this tradition over the years. We, the Desai family, started it, and soon the whole Brahma Kshatriya community started to participate. We organize deep prajna meditation classes in different temples every year,” said Rani Desai.
The group fired 5,000 diyas in its first year, and it’s adding more every year. “Dia is considered to be an auspicious lamp lit in every household. It is believed to bring us prosperity, welfare and positivity,” said Rani Desai.
She said the lightning of diyas is open to all until November, the holy Karthika Pournami.
