GHMC takes a series of steps to help those in need

GHMC helps self-help groups get financial assistance through banks at lower rates, while for street vendors, the loan amount is awarded by Atma Nirbhar Nidhi of PM Street Vendor.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is taking a range of measures for economically disadvantaged women, in addition to helping street vendors, people with special abilities, the elderly, unemployed youth and the homeless.

Citizen groups have also set up shelters for the homeless, which will especially help them escape cold weather conditions during the ongoing winter months, in addition to similar shelters set up in government hospitals for families/caregivers of hospitalized patients.

For women, 816 new Self Help Groups (SHGs) were formed this financial year (ending October), while 1,62,800 ID cards were issued for street vendors and 763 ID cards were issued for senior citizens in Aasara. In addition, under the Vikasam Initiative (Welfare for Persons with Disabilities – PWDs), 100 ID cards have been issued to persons with special abilities so far this fiscal year.

For those who obtained these ID cards through due process, GHMC helps SHGs to obtain financial assistance at lower interest rates through banks, and for street vendors, the loan amount is disbursed according to the amount of the loan granted by Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) of PM Street Vendor.

During the financial year, bank contacts of Rs 232.53 crore were completed with 3,278 SHGs and Rs 62.96 crore was paid to 55,619 street vendors.

At the same time, for the disabled and the elderly, citizen groups organized assessment camps across the city to distribute selected assistive devices and prosthetics. Equipment for eligible beneficiaries is provided by the Prosthetics Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) in coordination with the company.

Meanwhile, for unemployed youth belonging to weaker segments of the economy, a skills development and skills upgrading programme is being piloted in Shanti Nagar, Chandanagar. GHMC is partnering with the voluntary Lighthouse Community Foundation (LCF) on this program.

GHMC has also started to rescue the homeless and care for them in 13 shelters located in different parts of the city.

These homeless facilities are seven being constructed on the grounds of Koti Maternity Hospital (King Koti), Mahavir Hospital (Masab Tank), Ear Nose and Throat Hospital (King Koti), Niloufer Hospital (Red Hills), Osmania General Hospital outside the shelter. , NIMS Hospital and South Parley Regional Hospital.

These shelters in the hospital are being used by the patient’s family/caregiver.
