Visakhapatnam: Hundreds of demonstrators who took part in a rally against the privatization of the Visakhapatnam steel plant and demanding its continuation in the public sector were arrested on Wednesday near the gate of the Kulmannapalham steel plant.
Protesters had planned to bring the rally to the city’s Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation headquarters, where a public meeting would be held. But the police overpowered them and took them away in a van.

Union leader J. Ayodhyaram condemned the arrests, saying people would not remain silent if the Rs 300 crore Vizag steel plant was handed over to private groups in plate form. “The steel mill is the result of the sacrifice of many. Prime Minister Modi should announce in Vizag that it will continue in the public sector,” he said.
