Doha: Spain’s young side got off to a high start with a 7-0 win over Costa Rica on Wednesday.
Spain avoided any chance of an upset shortly after Japan beat Germany 2-1 in their other Group E match, with Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio and Ferran Torres in the top 31. A goal each minute.
Torres, Garvey, Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata extended their lead in the second half. Olmo’s goal was Spain’s 100th goal in the World Cup, making Spain the sixth country to score more than 100 goals in the World Cup.
This is the first time Spain has scored seven goals in a World Cup match. According to statistics platform Opta data, 18-year-old Garvey and 19-year-old Pedri started the game, and Spain became the first European country in 60 years to have two teenagers in the World Cup starting lineup.
Garvey then became the youngest goalscorer at a World Cup since Pele in the 1958 final, according to Opta.
