London: A team of researchers has identified the bacteria most commonly associated with severe oral infections, a finding that could provide greater insight into links between oral bacteria and other diseases.
The most common bacteria were Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria, while the most common genera were Streptococcus, Prevotella, and Staphylococcus.
Previous research has shown clear links between oral health and common diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have now analyzed samples collected between 2010 and 2020 from patients with severe oral infections at Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden and listed the most common bacteria.
“Here we report for the first time the microbial composition of bacterial infections in samples collected over a ten-year period in Stockholm County,” says Sallberg Chen, professor at the Department of Dental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet.
“The results show that several bacterial infections associated with systemic disease persist, and some have even increased in Stockholm over the past decade,” they added in their study published in the journal Microbiology Spectrum.
“Our findings provide new insights into the diversity and prevalence of harmful microbes in oral infections,” Chen said.
“If a bacterium infects and causes damage in the mouth, it is likely to cause damage to tissues in other parts of the body as the infection spreads,” the researchers noted.
