A 23-day-old boy diagnosed with galactosemic metabolic liver disease underwent a liver transplant at Yashoda Hospital

Hyderabad: A 23-day-old boy who was diagnosed with a metabolic liver disease called galactosemia, a rare genetic disorder, underwent a liver transplant at Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad.
A disorder of carbohydrate metabolism that affects the body’s ability to convert galactose into glucose. Babies appear normal at birth, but within days or weeks, suffer from loss of appetite and excessive vomiting. Yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and whites of the eyes (jaundice), as well as an enlarged liver, may also occur, according to a news release.
The child’s family history showed that two of his siblings died of liver disease at 2 and 9 months of age. His father came forward to donate part of his liver and was found fit for surgery.
The liver transplant procedure was performed by Dr K Venugopal, Dr Balbir Singh, Dr Srinivas Prabhu Chava and their team while the intra-operative anesthesia and post-operative care of the child was overseen by Dr Gopi Krishna, Chief Anesthetist at the Liver Transplant Program, and his team.
The child was discharged from the hospital 3 weeks after the operation, with stable immunosuppression and stable transplanted liver function.
