Five Steps to Studying in the US: How to Adapt to Culture Shock

Hello readers! In our last column, we continued our discussion of “Step 5: Getting Ready to Go,” with information about arriving at a US university.

As a brief recap, students should complete the following tasks before departing: arrange temporary and long-term housing, plan to attend New Student Orientation (NSO) classes, and otherwise prepare for life in the United States

Today, we’re going to talk about culture shock and how to adapt to a new environment. Culture shock is an adjustment period when someone is not accustomed to a new cultural and social environment. Everyone reacts differently to living in a new culture, and it’s okay if you don’t adapt right away.

Try to keep an open mind and make the transition as easy as possible. Some things may seem unusual, but try to understand something new instead of rejecting it. Making new friends can also help ease the transition.

Building a support network near you while maintaining connections in India will boost your confidence when interacting with a new culture.

Agency-based adaptation services are also available. International student centres, counseling centres, homestay options and tutoring services are all available and can help students adjust to their new environment.

Universities may also organize short day trips to show incoming international students the area. If available and relevant, try to take these tours. Any information on these services can be found on the website of the student’s institution.

Other activities such as student clubs, associations and fitness centers may be beneficial for students to acclimate to the local area and culture. Allowing yourself to be part of the community will encourage a sense of familiar comfort.

Remaining in a new culture that is foreign to you only creates more anxiety. International students in the U.S. have the opportunity to gain a rich multicultural higher education experience, and they should allow themselves time to overcome their fears of new surroundings.

Next week we’ll be discussing American academic culture!
