Soon, Diploma students in Telangana will be able to withdraw from the course after the first year

Hyderabad: As part of the State Board of Technical Education and Training’s (SBTET) program’s multiple entry and exit policy, Diploma students will be allowed to exit shortly after successfully completing their first year of course work. Withdrawal is permitted if the student earns the required credits assigned in the first year.

Such candidates who exit after the first year are awarded a certificate with which they can continue with the intermediate course for the second year.

To this end, SBTET has sent a proposal to the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TS BIE) seeking the award of the Intermediate First Year Equivalency Certificate for the first year of the Diploma. This will enable those candidates who withdraw from the Diploma after the first year to continue on to the second year of the Intermediate programme.

The new rule being planned by the Technology Council, which offers three-year diploma programs in both engineering and non-engineering fields, will only apply to students taking engineering courses.

To be eligible for the diploma, students must earn a minimum of 130 credits out of a total of 150 credits. Students wishing to exit after the first year of the Diploma program will receive a certificate provided they have earned 45 of the 50 credits.

In addition to this, those candidates who earn a total of 45 credits in their first year, first and second year or first, second and third year will also be eligible for the certificate. “We are waiting for TS BIE to issue an intermediate first year equivalency certificate for the first year of the Diploma. Once approved, this new exit policy will be implemented,” an official said.

Starting this academic year, STBET has introduced an exit policy after completing the second year of the diploma program, such students will be awarded a certificate in engineering with a minimum of 90 credits. These Secondary 2 equivalent certificates can be used to study regular undergraduate courses such as BA, BSc and BCom. Students who earn 90 credits until the third year but are unable to earn 130 credits to award the diploma are also eligible for the Engineering Certificate.

Currently, students who successfully complete the Diploma program and pass the Telangana State Engineering Common Entrance Test (TS ECET) are eligible for lateral entry into second-year engineering and pharmacy programs offered by professional colleges in the state.
