Hyderabad: Rescuers came to the family of a motorist who was battling three daughters with a genetic disorder on Sunday following the intervention of IT Minister KT Rama Rao.

The driver of the car, Venkataiah, has five children, three of whom have a genetic disorder that has forced the family to travel to raise funds and make multiple trips to the hospital for treatment. The three girls had health problems after they turned 18 and had to drop out of school, even as their parents tried desperately to find money to get them treated.

The family’s plight drew Rama Rao’s attention on Twitter, seeking help for Venkataiah.

The minister immediately responded to the tweet, assigning Peerzadiguda Mayor Jakka Venkat Reddy to assist the family. The mayor visited Venkataiah’s home together with Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi, director of the Institute of Genetics and Hospital of Genetic Diseases, who examined the girls and said medical tests are necessary to decide on treatment options.

Venkat Reddy informed the Minister that in his personal capacity he provided financial assistance of Rs 100,000, doctor’s assurance of medical examination and medical support.

Rama Rao instructed the mayor to act as their guardian and asked them if they received pensions. He also suggested giving them part-time jobs or opening a shop to provide skills training and educational training for the children.

Venkat Reddy said one of the affected girls does not fall under the category of Disabled Persons (PWD) and she will be employed by Peerzadiguda Municipal Corporation. “I’m also going to make sure that other people with disabilities in the family get financial assistance as well,” he said.
