halways: Osmania University (OU) decided to use cutting-edge technology to record attendance, in addition to reducing unauthorized access to its cafeteria facilities.
CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition systems (FRS) integrated with AI and ML in canteen facilities will soon capture images of students using the canteen and sync details such as name, roll number and canteen number with an available database.
The new initiative will provide university administration with two major benefits — recording attendance and monitoring those who use dining hall facilities. It also helps with confusion management in case of impersonation, or if a student falsely claims not to use a facility despite using it. Currently, cafeteria staff register attendance based on students’ cafeteria numbers.
“The university has decided to integrate the facial recognition system into the surveillance cameras that will be installed in the cafeteria facilities. This new system will be implemented starting this academic year,” a senior official said.
Currently, the university campus, including colleges and various buildings, is covered by 808 CCTV cameras. An additional 215 cameras are proposed to be installed in uncovered areas.
Harvest Technologies, another initiative the university laid out to implement geographic attendance through a mobile app, does away with time-consuming biometric attendance.
The administration is in talks with a company about a mobile app that would scan entire classes at once and capture images of students. These images are then synced with details such as photos, names and roll numbers available in the database and attendance is recorded. It also marks the longitude and latitude of the building where attendance is recorded.
“It takes each student at least 10 seconds to have their attendance recorded by the biometric machine. With just one scan, the mobile app can capture an entire class’s attendance in 90 seconds. On a pilot basis, the The new initiative will be implemented in the University’s Faculty of Engineering,” OU Vice-Chancellor Professor D Ravinder told Telangana today.
New Centennial Administration Building to be Completed
In addition to delineating the legacy of the Osmania University (OU) 100-year-old brand, to facilitate access for outsiders, the university is building a new century-old administrative building opposite the main entrance of the IICT. The foundation stone will be laid this week.
The G 2 storey building will cover over 200,000 sq. ft. at a cost of Rs. 337.5 crore and the funding will be shared between the university and the state government. The Telangana State Education and Welfare Infrastructure Development Corporation will execute the works.
