New Delhi: Private members’ bill on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Friday amid protests by opposition parties.

The bill was introduced by BJP member Kirodi Lal Meena.

A total of 63 MPs voted in favor of the bill and 23 against.

When Biju Janata Dal walked out of the House, Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and DMK held protests.

UCC has been present in many election manifestos of BJP while Private Members Bill is pending but not introduced.

The UCC is a proposed law to create and enforce personal laws of citizens, applicable to all citizens regardless of religion, gender or sexual orientation.

As soon as the bill was introduced in the House of Representatives, opposition MPs began to protest, leading to chaos.

Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar had to intervene as noisy scenes prevailed.

The chairman assured opposition MPs that every action in the House would be conducted in accordance with established rules.

He had asked opposition MPs to participate in the motion and express their views.

Ram Gopal Yadav, Rajya Sabha MP for Samajwadi party, said of UCC: “Marrying a cousin is considered good among Muslims but bad among Hindus…in this case , how will the government implement the UCC?”

In addition, several MPs such as CPI-M’s Vaiko, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya and AA Rahim also voiced their opposition to the private MP’s bill on UCC.

Rajya Sabha MP PV Abdul Wahab from IUML in Kerala said, “Under no circumstances should UCC be implemented in India”.

Meanwhile, lawmakers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued to support the UCC.

Amid the din, the chairman intervened again, urging all members to speak when their turn was up.

Another lower house MP from Kerala, CPI-Maoist Eramaram Karim, told the chairman that he should instruct Mina to withdraw the proposal as it would undermine diversity in the country, and added that it should not be imposed in this way.
