Hyderabad: Ladakh deputy governor Radha Krishna Mathur on Wednesday expressed support for researchers at the Hyderabad-based Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) who are looking for a reliable and affordable technique to distinguish between different species of wool.
During a one-day visit to CCMB, Radha Krishna Mathur discusses in detail the Pashmina wool, known for its quality, obtained from Changthangi goats across Ladakh, especially the Changthang, often blended with other forms of wool.
The CCMB is working to develop technologies to identify the animal origin of many types of wool sold in India and the researchers informed the Governor that the Governor suggested that these technologies should be certified and developed for use and that such certification would be useful to domestic and international customers.
He pledged to help CCMB source different types of wool samples from goats of different ages in different regions of Ladakh.
CCMB Director Dr Vinay K Nandicoori said: “We are struggling to find a reliable and affordable technique to differentiate between different types of wool. Lt Governor’s assistance in sourcing appropriate and reliable sources of wool will be very helpful as our test standard value.”
