Hyderabad: The concerted efforts and strategic measures taken by the state government to curb unnecessary caesarean sections during childbirth have started to show positive results in Telangana.

For the first time since October, the state has seen a drop in the number of Caesarean deliveries in both private and government hospitals. In October last year, 61.41 percent of deliveries in private and government hospitals were by caesarean section, compared to 54.49 percent in October this year, a drop of 7 percentage points. Currently, 77 per cent of deliveries in the state’s private hospitals and 44 per cent in government hospitals are by caesarean section.
Over the past year or so, we have been working to educate pregnant women and their families about the importance of a safe and normal delivery.
Dr P Malathi, director of the Modern Government Maternity Hospital in Petlaburj, said the focus is on practicing some simple exercises and techniques that can help reduce pain and discomfort and prepare a pregnant woman’s body for a normal delivery. “That’s why we do a series of exercises for pregnant women every day in the hospital,” she said.
Pregnant women in government maternity hospitals also receive a series of consultation sessions with junior and senior doctors aimed at raising awareness of the importance of normal childbirth.
“Most senior physicians are seeing primiparas, women who are pregnant for the first time, and that reassures them about a normal delivery,” Dr. Malathi said.
The health department has also introduced measures to encourage private medical institutions to avoid unnecessary caesarean sections. Health Minister T Harish Rao held several meetings with the management of district private hospitals to encourage them to deliver more normally.
Utilizing the services of midwives to ensure a safe, happy and normal delivery for pregnant women is also a major initiative taken by the state government. Recently, some 407 midwives were deployed to various government maternal health facilities.
