Rupee falls 4 paise to 82.80 against dollar

In the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened weaker against the dollar at 82.84 before rising to 82.80, down 4 paise from its previous close.

Rupee falls 4 paise to 82.80 against dollar

Mumbai: The rupee depreciated by 4 paise to 82.80 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday amid a drop in domestic stocks and risk aversion in global markets.

However, a weaker dollar overseas supported the domestic currency and limited losses, currency traders said.

In the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened weaker against the dollar at 82.84 before rising to 82.80, down 4 paise from its previous close.

In the previous session on Thursday, the rupee fell 27 paise to 82.76 against the dollar.

Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar index , which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.28% to 104.27.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.59% to $81.69 a barrel.

On the domestic market, the 30-share BSE Sensex lost 293.36 points or 0.47 percent to 61,505.67. The broader NSE Nifty fell 77.85 points or 0.42 percent to 18,337.05.

Foreign institutional investors (FII) turned net sellers in the capital market on Thursday as they dumped shares worth Rs 7,107.4 crore, according to exchange data.
