So far, 493,000 traditional street lights have been replaced with LED lights in Hyderabad.
Hyderabad: The adoption of LED (Light Emitting Diode) approach has helped Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) improve the status of its treasury while contributing to the environment by reducing carbon emissions.
Civilian institutions that have adopted energy-saving models have saved Rs. 5.58 billion and reduced carbon emissions by approximately 516,000 tonnes. Savings include costs for electricity, material purchases, maintenance and staff.
At present, 493,000 traditional street lamps in the city have been replaced with LED street lamps, and the application range of LED has been further expanded. The number of LED street lights in 2020 is 453,000, increasing to 492,000 in 2021, and there are currently 521,000 LEDs in the GHMC limit.
According to GHMC, the cost savings of replacing traditional street lights with LEDs can be substantial. If Rs 42.42 crore was savings in 2017-18, it will increase to Rs 85.23 crore in 2018-19, Rs 844.8 crore in 2019-20 and Rs 867.2 crore in 2020-21. According to available data, the saving in electricity bills for the period April-October 2021 is Rs 499.3 crore.
More than Rs 80 crore has been saved this year (as of December 1), GHMC officials said. GHMC officials noted that, in addition to significant reductions in electricity bills, the move to adopt LED street lighting has contributed significantly to reducing staff and maintenance expenses.
Carbon emissions are also reduced by the Environmentally Friendly Electricity Company, which was formed in association with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).
According to GHMC data, energy saving measures help reduce carbon emissions by 129,000 tons per year. After replacing traditional street lights with LEDs, more than 501,000 tons of carbon emissions were reduced.
Before installing LEDs, GHMC restricted the electricity consumption of street lights to 20.07 MU per month, which used to cost about Rs 149.4 crore per month.
Currently, the electricity consumption has dropped to 9.96 MU and the monthly bill has dropped to Rs 8.50 crore.

Solar panels save on electricity bills
GHMC’s clean energy practice has saved over Rs 132 crore in electricity bills by installing solar panels on 34 of its buildings.
The company tapped the expertise of the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) to execute the project.
“The plan is to generate the required amount of clean energy through solar panels to enable the GHMC buildings to be self-sustaining without spending money on electricity bills,” GHMC officials said.
