NGOs launch campaign against use of nylon manja

The Animal Warrior Conservation Society (AWCS), which has been campaigning against the use of nylon manjas for the past several years, has rescued more than 320 manja-trapped birds in Telangana in 2022.

Hyderabad: Come to Sankranthi, the sky of Telangana will be dotted with kites of different colours. But as much as people love flying kites high in the clouds, using nylon manja for these paper birds has proven to be quite dangerous for real birds.

The Animal Warriors Conservation Society (AWCS), which has been campaigning against the use of nylon manjas for the past several years, will save more than 320 manja-trapped birds in Telangana in 2022. Near Hyderabad.

Not only the AWCS, but also some NGOs are working to save the birds, which means that the number of affected birds may increase several times.

Birds stranded in the middle of nowhere by nylon twine are starving to death because of the nylon twine.

This year, AWCS has partnered with the HCL Foundation to raise awareness among suppliers, students and parents in a number of ways to limit the use of manja. Even though the forestry department has banned manja, vendors continue to sell it.

AWCS volunteers are printing large posters of manja-trapped birds and are meeting with suppliers. Starting their journey at BHEL, eight AWCS volunteers have visited 50 suppliers so far and plan to cover hundreds of stores by January 1st.

In addition to meeting and promoting suppliers, volunteers encourage suppliers to swear that they will not sell nylon manja. Pictures and videos of the same are also posted on social media to reach more people. In addition, AWCS volunteers also visit schools to educate students. So far, they have reached over 500 students in 12 schools. To reach the masses, AWCS plans to stage street theater and Burra Katha performances, in addition to producing multiple videos, animated videos, cartoons and other content to educate people.

Speaking of Telangana today, AWCS founder Pradeep Nair said the forest department conducts raids during the Sankranthi season but it is difficult to cover so many kite suppliers. Many vendors are also secretly selling nylon manja.

The movement is not against kite flying, he said, but against the use of manja, especially the glass-coated and nylon varieties. People can contact AWCS on the hotline 9697887888 for animal and bird rescues.
