Shillong: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the North East Council (NEC)’s Golden Jubilee celebrations and inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for various projects at a public event in Shillong.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers and governors of the eight north-east states also participated in the Golden Jubilee celebration of NEC, a regional planning body established in 1972 to plan and execute development projects in the eight north-east states.
At a public event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Polo Field) in Shillong, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth over Rs 245 crore.
The prime minister will travel from Shillong to Agartala where on Sunday he will address a public gathering at the Swami Vivekananda grounds and inaugurate some projects and lay the foundation stone for others worth over Rs 4,350 crore.
Sushanta Chowdhury, Minister of Information and Cultural Affairs, Tripura, said the Prime Minister will be launching the ‘Grih Pravesh’ program for beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban and Rural) as a key step.
The houses have been developed at a cost of over Rs 3,400 crore and will benefit more than 2 lakh beneficiaries.
With a focus on improving road connectivity, the Prime Minister will launch a project to widen the Agartala bypass (Khayerpur – Amtali) NH-08, which will help ease traffic congestion in the city of Agartala.
He will also lay the foundation stone for 32 roads with a length of more than 230 km and improve 112 roads with a length of more than 540 km under PMGSY III (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana).
Modi will also open the National Institute of Hotel Management in Anandnagar on the outskirts of Agartala city and the Government Dental College in Agartala, the capital.
The BJP-led government has issued notices calling for central and state government officials in Agartala to attend the rally.
More than 72,000 people from across the state will attend the public rally, Tripura Information Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said.
Sitripura police chief Sankar Debnath said the border security force responsible for the border with Bangladesh was also on alert in light of the prime minister’s visit.
Before returning to Delhi, the prime minister will meet the BJP MLA at the state guest house and discuss the roadmap for the Tripura state assembly elections, which are expected to be held next February.
