The 2:34 a.m. quake was centered in the Pacific Ocean about 15 miles from Fortuna, a city of about 12,000 people in Humboldt County, according to the US Geological Survey.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said the two deaths occurred “as a result of medical emergencies” during and after the quake.
After the initial major quake, more than a dozen aftershocks were recorded, some measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
A total of 99,000 customers in Humboldt County had reported more than 70,000 outages as of late Tuesday, according to utility tracker PowerOutage.us.
Tuesday’s quake comes a year after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Cape Mendocino in Humboldt County on Dec. 20, 2021, causing minor damage to buildings in the area.
