The ‘Khelo India’ program was introduced to reinvigorate sports culture in India at the grassroots level by creating a strong framework for all sporting activities in the country.
Warangal: To encourage sports talent among youth in rural areas and towns, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), an autonomous organization under the administrative control of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, approved four training centers under the umbrella of “Khelo” India in former Warang Plans for the Gard region. The ‘Khelo India’ program was introduced to reinvigorate sports culture in India at the grassroots level by creating a strong framework for all sporting activities in the country.
Thanks to the efforts of the Telangana State Government, SAI has approved the establishment of Khelo India Center (KIC) to train emerging athletes in Kho-Kho, Judo, Boxing and Cycling. The Kho-Kho center will be located in Kesamudram, Mahababad district, the judo center will be located in O city, Warangal and the boxing coaching center in Hanamkonda. SAI has approved the bicycle center to Mulugu district.
Speaking to “Telangana Today”, Hanamkonda District Youth Sports Officer (DYSO) Gugulothu Ashok Kumar said senior national boxer Prabhu has been appointed as the coach and head of the Hanamkonda Boxing Training Centre.
“I have provided boxers with some equipment near the JNS venue in Hanamkonda,” he said, adding that under the Khelo India scheme, Rs 5 lakh will be released annually for five years. “It will be a boon for budding boxers. The center may be established in Hanamkonda within a month. The centers are being set up across the country to train and develop athletes to help them win medals in the next Olympics,” he said. .
The SAI has approved KICs in 17 districts of Telangana which incorporate specific sports disciplines. The program provides funding for materials and coaching, and provides for an equal ratio of male and female trainees with past champions as coaches/mentors. According to officials, as the continuation of the program is based on the results obtained through KIC’s annual assessment, SAI may withdraw the centers anytime after one year.
Meanwhile, Mahababad DYSO Anil Kumar said that they have submitted proposals to establish a hockey and Kho-Kho center in Kesamudram and a hockey center in Mahababad, and SAI has approved the establishment of a Kho-Kho center in Kesamudram. “The Kho-Kho center will be located at Zilla Parishad High School in the center of the Kesamudram mandal,” he added.
“The establishment of the Kho-Kho training center will be very useful for the players as there are no coaching facilities in the area,” said senior national Kho-Kho Aktar Pasha from Mahababad.
