Hyderabad: The state government has issued an order allocating Rs 2,500 crore to repair rain-damaged roads and build culverts in the state.

The government has asked the Ministry of Roads and Buildings to complete tenders for road repairs and culvert construction as early as possible. Of the approved amount, Rs 1,865 crore has been allocated for road repairs and Rs 6,350 crore for construction of culverts.

According to R&B officials, the decision to allocate funds for road maintenance and culvert construction was taken at a review meeting of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on December 10.

The Chief Minister ordered the Ministry of Finance to release funds for this purpose, and as such, the amount was sanctioned.

On a directive from the Chief Minister, Roads and Buildings Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy has asked officials of the department to work on operational readiness to repair roads damaged by torrential rains in different parts of the state.

Officials found multiple damage to culverts along roads in Karimnagar, Adilabad, Warangal, Khammam, Medak, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad and Rangareddy (rural) circles.

Of the total 27,521 kilometers of national roads, 1,675 kilometers of roads were damaged by the rain in 664 places, according to officials. A total of 1,087 culverts and roads under the NHAI were also badly damaged by the rain.

The repairs will be tendered and work will be completed within two months, officials said.
