Series of HMWSSB projects in 2022 to ensure stable supply of drinking water

With the rapid expansion of the city, more than 1,200 colonies are located outside the limits of the GHMC and require potable water supplies.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Municipal Water and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) in 2022.

As part of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) Phase 2 project, the Water Authority laid water pipes in more than 500 colonies outside the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and within the ORR jurisdiction.

Once the reservoirs in these places are built, the colonies will start getting water. HMWS&SB plans to complete the entire project by December 2023.

With the city’s dramatic expansion, more than 1,200 colonies, most of them new, are located outside GHMC limits and within ORR jurisdiction where potable water must be provided.

“We signed the agreement in January 2022 after we identified the colonies. Since the date the agreement was signed, the number of colonies has increased,” said a water bureau official.

The Rs 1,200 crore ORR Phase 2 project will provide potable water to Gram Panchayats, municipalities, municipal corporations, housing layouts and gated communities.

According to water board officials, the current water demand in Hyderabad stands at 37 TMC and is expected to increase to 47.76 TMC by 2035, 58.98 TMC by 2050, 67.71 TMC by 2065 and 100 TMC by 2072. 70.97 TMC.

Considering the rapid development of Hyderabad and the huge demand for potable water expected in the coming decades, the state government has directed the Water Board to implement the Sunkishala water intake project.

After the project is completed, even if the rainfall is insufficient, it can meet the drinking water needs of residents within the GHMC area and the Hyderabad urban agglomeration area.

Another unique initiative undertaken by the Water Board this year is the construction of 31 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Hyderabad, targeting to treat 1,257.5 million liters per day (MLD) of sewage through three guarantees at a cost of Rs. 100% of the city’s sewage treatment.

The Water Board has set itself a target to complete all STP works by June 2023, which will make Hyderabad the only city in the country to treat all its sewage.
