Hyderabad: Established 32 years ago, Jubilee Coffee is a hidden gem in Jubilee Hills known for serving a variety of beverages including coffee, tea, hot chocolate, lemon tea, chocolate coffee and honey lemon tea.
“In 1990, I opened a stall on the sidewalk at the Jubilee Hills Checkpost signal, where I used to set up tables and sell cigarettes. In 2000, I installed a coffee machine and started selling coffee and tea,” proud Jubilee Coffee said Afsar Khan, the owner.
About ten years ago, the stall became a small shop in a side alley next to the same Jubilee Hills Checkpost signal. Afsar Khan said his son Ashraf Khan and his son-in-law started the shop after him.
“We had customers who used to ask for coffee and tea after setting up a cigarette stall in the evening. It was difficult for us to install the stove, gas and make tea or coffee, so we didn’t do that. Then we happened to meet a guy who asked us to get Take away his useless coffee machine. Thinking of giving it a try, I put it in a stall getting electricity from a nearby shop,” said Afsar Khan, 60, of how he started the business.
Soon, customers got used to their lemon tea. Afsar Khan’s family saw people coming from far away just to drink lemon tea, coffee and hot chocolate from Jubilee Coffee.
They were amazed to see so many customers visiting their stall and had wondered where they heard about their stall, but believed people came mainly through word of mouth.
When they opened Jubilee Coffee, there were no other shops in the alley except their house and a piercing shop. Afsar recalls that the coffee shop eventually attracted so many customers that the alley used to be packed, prompting many other shops to open on the alley.
“We sell close to 1,000-1,200 cups of tea and coffee a day,” said son Ashraf Khan, 24, who took responsibility and started working with his father when he was 15.
While things are going well, Afsar Khan’s family currently has no plans to expand the store. Jubilee Coffee is open daily from 3am to 5pm and 10pm to 12pm.
