All public schools in Telangana to have libraries

Hyderabad: In order not to fall behind private and corporate schools, the state government has decided to build libraries in all government and local body schools across the state.

In addition to establishing libraries in 5,000 government and local body schools, the program has established full facilities in 2,732 high schools (including 998 primary schools).

In order to build the libraries, the school education department decided to provide 120 books for each library. Officials are planning to procure the books from the National Book Trust (NBT).

After establishing libraries in 5,000 public primary schools, the state government has allowed the department to provide 600,000 books to these schools. Therefore, the Government Textbook Publishing House has recently started printing these books. Likewise, books to help students improve their reading skills will be available in public high school libraries.

As digital/online learning that relies on TVs and computers gives way to a return to physical classes during the Covid-19 pandemic, some students are reportedly struggling with basic reading and writing skills. As a means of restoring and improving these skills in students, the department has introduced ‘Tholimettu’, the basic literacy numeracy programme.

As part of this scheme, libraries are being established in schools with different kinds of books. Once the library is operational, schools are directed to have at least 15 minutes of library time each day.

The department has instructed teachers to ensure that students read subject books as well as other books provided by the library. They are also directed to ensure that students achieve a basic level of competence.
