New Delhi: Congress on Sunday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the situation in Manipur, saying “Mann Ki Baat” but another ” Maun” (Silence).
More than 100 people were killed in the violent clashes between the Maytel and Kuki ethnic groups in Manipur state a month ago.
Congress secretary-general Jairam Ramesh took a swipe at Prime Minister Jairam Ramesh saying: “Manipur has one more Mann ki Baat, But Maun. The Prime Minister praised India’s strong capabilities in disaster management. What about the completely man-made (actually self-inflicted) humanitarian catastrophe facing Manipur?” “He still hasn’t called for peace There is an unauditable PM-CARES fund but the real question is whether PM cares about Manipur,” Ramesh tweeted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast on Sunday that no one can control natural disasters, but the disaster management prowess that India has developed over the years is becoming a model today.
Ten opposition parties in Congress-led Manipur state on Saturday questioned Prime Minister Modi’s “silence” on ongoing violence in the northeastern state, while urging him to meet them and call for peace.
The clashes first erupted on May 3 after a “tribal solidarity march” was organized in the mountains to protest the Meitei community’s claim to Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The Meiteis make up about 53% of the population of Manipur and live mainly in the Imphal Valley. Tribes – the Nagas and Kukis – make up the other 40 percent of the population and live in the mountains.
