Mumbai: “Excited” Apple CEO Tim Cook greeted a crowd and first customers to the beat of desi drums on Tuesday as he opened the company’s first branded retail store in the country.
Cook emerged from the Mumbai retail store to pose for a photo with the first Apple buyers to pour in.
He greets customers at Apple BKC, located in Jio World Drive Mall, the financial, arts and entertainment district of Mumbai’s bustling Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
A new Apple flagship retail store in Mumbai, followed by one in New Delhi, backed by aggressive sales plans, will drive Apple’s growth in the coming year.
“Apple BKC reflects Mumbai’s vibrant culture, bringing together the best of Apple in a beautiful, welcoming space of communication and community,” said Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Retail.
Apple BKC will present a special Today at Apple series “Mumbai Rising,” running from Tuesdays through the summer.
Bringing together visitors, local artists and creatives, these free sessions featuring Apple products and services will offer hands-on activities that celebrate local communities and cultures.
Apple BKC aims to be one of the most energy-efficient Apple Stores in the world, with a dedicated solar array and zero reliance on fossil fuels for store operations.
The store is operationally carbon neutral and runs on 100% renewable energy.
Each tile is made from 408 pieces of wood, and each tile forms 31 modules, for a total of 1,000 tiles that make up the ceiling.
There are more than 450,000 individual timber elements, all assembled in Derry.
Upon entering the store, customers are greeted by two stone walls from Rajasthan and a 14m long stainless steel staircase connecting the ground floor and the cantilevered mezzanine.
Apple BKC has more than 100 team members who collectively speak more than 20 languages.
