Jinju (Korea): Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga won silver in the snatch but fell short of the overall score as he failed to lift weight in three of his disappointing clean and jerk attempts at the Asian Championships on Sunday.
Competing in his first competition since winning gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Jeremy is the only one of the 12 lifters not to finish (DNF).
However, the 20-year-old claimed silver in the snatch event with a personal best of 141kg in the non-Olympic 67kg weightlifting competition.
Jeremy failed to lift 165kg in his first two clean and jerk attempts. He then increased the weight to 168kg, which was 2kg more than his personal best, also a national record, but the defending Youth Olympic champion faltered again.
In fact, in six attempts — three each in the snatch and clean and jerk — Jeremy could only lift the bar twice.
“I don’t know what happened today. It was just bad luck,” Jeremy told PTI.
“After two failed attempts in the clean and jerk, I went for the national record. I lifted 168kg many times in training, but today was not my day,” he added.
The Mizo lifter, who is returning from a thigh injury that missed last year’s world championships, looked rusty from the start.
He got off to a bad start, faltering in his first snatch attempt at 137kg due to a right knee injury. However, on the next attempt, he was able to lift the same weight with ease.
Jeremy then broke the snatch mark with a successful attempt at 141kg, earning the second highest lift in the segment before things went bad for him.
The disappointment on the Indian’s face could be seen at the medal ceremony as the weightlifters stood on the podium.
Chinese player He Yueji won the gold medal in the 320 kg class (147 kg + 173 kg), while local player Li Xiangyan won the gold medal in the 314 kg class (139 kg + 175 kg) and Uzbekistan weightlifter Elgashev Adhamjung in the 312 kg class ( 138 kg + 174 kg) won the silver and bronze medals respectively.
Bindyarani Devi kicked off India’s medal tally with a silver medal in the women’s 55kg event on Saturday.
