Berlin: Writer Salman Rushdie has been awarded the prestigious German award for his literary work and for his determination and positivity in the face of ongoing danger, prize organizers said on Monday.
The German Book Trade Peace Prize said the Anglo-American author would receive the award in Frankfurt on October 22.
The jury said Rushdie’s work “combines narrative vision with constant literary innovation, humor and wit”. “He described the power of violent regimes to destroy entire societies, but also the indestructibility of individual resistance.” Last August, Rushdie was stabbed multiple times on stage at a New York state literary festival.
“Although he was still battling enormous physical and psychological consequences, he continued to write – in an imaginative and deeply human way,” the German jury wrote. “We salute Salman Rushdie for his determination, positive approach to life, and for enriching the world with the joy of narrative.” Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini has denounced Rush The reference to the Prophet Muhammad in Dee’s 1988 novel The Satanic Verses is blasphemous. Khomeini issued a decree calling for the death penalty for Rushdie the following year, forcing the author into hiding, despite traveling freely for years before he was stabbed last summer.
The German prize of 25,000 euros ($27,350) has been awarded since 1950.
